December 14, 2011

If you've ever seen a message come in on your iPhone but decided not to click it so that you can check it later on your computer, this tip is for you.

After you've read a message, the blue unread dot next to the message goes away, however there is a way to mark the message as unread. Once you've found the message you want to unread, click on "Edit". Select the message by clicking on it and click the "Mark" button on the bottom right of the screen. From here, a menu will popup with the choice to either flag the message or unread it. Click "Unread".

The blue dot signifying an unread message should pop up, and the message will show up as unread on all your devices!

Which Apple iPhone 4S should you choose? AT&T vs. Verizon vs. Sprint

October 19, 2011

The Apple iPhone 4S is a worthwhile upgrade, so cash in your used iPhones here.

iphone4s

Why should you get the new 4S?

√ much better 8MP camera

1080P HD video

incredible graphics and speed

Siri Assistant, voice control, and dictation

With three options for service with the new 4S, which carrier should you choose?

If you are stuck with one carrier because of a family plan or due to early termination fees, then you may not have a choice, but there are different coverage, pricing, and data options that can make choosing your carrier a tough decision.

We dug through all the information to help you come to the best informed decision.  We hope compiling all the information and comparisons in one plan will help you!

First, check out the speed test across all carriers.

iphone-4s-3g-data-speed

Sprint

Pros:

Sprint offers unlimited data and the lowest price for a price plan with unlimited minutes & text and 2MB+ data at $110 a month.  If you don't want to worry about going over your data plan this may be right for you.

Cons:

Data travels over CDMA network and will be lower than AT&T's HSPA+ network.  No simultaneous voice and data due to CDMA limitiations.  Mobile hotspot costs another $30 a month.

AT&T

Pros:

AT&T's HSPA+ network supports 14.4 mbps downloads making it the fastest of all carriers (actual speeds may very).  You can use voice and data similtaneously, so you can navigate using GPS while talking on the phone! AT&T offer the cheapest overal plan at $55 if you use 450 or fewer minutes and don't use text.

Cons:

Data costs more than other carriers when you go over 2GB.  Coverage and customer satisfaction not as good as Verizon.

Verizon

Pros:

Verizon offers the best coverage in most areas.  Verizon has the cheapest plan at $75 for moderate data users who need 2GB or less data, use 450 or fewer minutes, and send 250 or fewer texts a month.  According to surveys, Verizon has the highest customer satifaction and highest call quality.  They also have the widest selection of data plans from 2GB to 12GB.

Cons:

Data speeds on Verizon's CDMA network may be slower than AT&T's HSPS+ network. No simultaneous voice and data due to CDMA limitiations.

Data Usage

To help you figure out how much data you use we put together this info, but by no means is it exact so always check on your actual data usage!

A 200 megabyte data plan equals about:

√ 1,000 Web pages

√ 300 photo downloads

√ 50 songs

√ 11 YouTube videos

or

√ about an hour of Netflix videos

A 2 gigabyte data plan equals about:

√ 13,000 Web pages

√ 4,000 photos

√ 600 songs

√ 130 YouTube videos

or

√ about 9 hours of Netflix viewing.

Here is a breakdown of all the plans:

att-vs-verizon-vs-sprint

Final Conclusions

√ If you want the fastest speed choose AT&T

√ If you want to surf the web, email, or use GPS while talking then choose AT&T

√ If you want unlimited data choose Sprint

√ If you want the best overall coverage and call clarity choose Verizon

Work Out While You Work

December 03, 2010

With a full day at work it is often hard for people to find time to work out.  Some people are able to work out before work, as the Google cyclists do on a regular basis.  The group of Googlers, known as, "SF2G," bikes 42 miles to work.  Click here to read more about the Google cyclists.

Brian from SellYourMac.com takes a different approach.  I asked the question, "Why not workout while I work?"  I found the answer to this question by purchasing a treadmill desk called the "Trek Desk" as seen here.  The Trek Desk is not supportive enough for a Mac Pro and monitor, so a hydraulic desk was necessary to station behind the Trek Desk.  The last piece of equipment was a treadmill purchased at Costco.com, and now the setup was complete!  Now I had a fully functional work/workout station he has dubbed as the "iTreadmill."

Not only does the iTreadmill provide an excellent way to burn calories on the job, it also helps to keep focus.  I find while my feet are moving it is harder to get distracted.  This setup may not be for everyone, but for strictly computer work it is a breeze.  Walking at 1.5mph, I can type without errors.  Writing is another story, as it is difficult to write legibly while walking.

Walking an average of 5-6 miles a day, I am staying fit on the job.  If you work all day at a computer, I highly recommends the iTreadmill setup!  Submit a quote to sell your Mac here and I will respond right away without even breaking a sweat.

P.S.  For all your Mac geeks who want to know more about the Mac setup in the photo, I am running a 2010 Mac Pro 2.4Ghz 8 Core with 20GB RAM and SSD.  The LCD in the photo is a 42" Toshiba LCD TV and there has been a 2nd Apple 27" LED display added since the photo was taken.
