Strategy to Preorder the Apple iPhone X

Apple's iPhone X (pronounced "iPhone Ten") will be in short supply due to the complexity of its components, notably the sensors for the 3D front camera and FaceID and the new edge-to-edge OLED screen. News outlets have reported that only 20 million iPhone Xs will be available for sale between now and Christmas. That’s 50% below earlier projections, which means a lot of Apple fans will be left out in the cold.

Fortunately, SYM has your back. Below you’ll find a step-by-step insiders’ guide to the pre-order process. The key is to be among the first wave of successful preorders, as the initial allotment will sell out almost immediately.

Step 1: Prepping for the Preorder: 2:45 am EST October 27th / 11:45 pm PST October 26th

First, you want to launch every available app and website that you could possibly use to pre-order. The reason for this is simple: Since there’s no way to know which website or app will be the first to allow you to checkout, the best method is to try them all. This includes, at minimum, the Apple Store app, Apple's online website, and your carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc). You might also want to access other major retailers (Best Buy, WalMart) as a last resort.

Over the years, I've had the best luck using the Apple Store app. It has a simple, easy-to-follow interface that allows you to tap quickly through the options. And since Apple already has your info on file, checkout is a breeze.

Once you have your iPhone or iPad ready on the Apple Store app, use your Mac to open the Apple store and the website for your carrier. Get logged in and sit tight for the pre-order to begin!

Step 2: Purchasing the iPhone X: 3am EST / 12 am PST October 27th

When 3am EST hits, the massive traffic spike means these websites will likely all be down. Refresh the websites and check the app to see which one allows you to get started first. If the Apple Store app is working, start there. Use the Apple Store website as your second option, and your carrier as the third option. If one of the sites is slow, try another.

Be warned: This make take a while, and all the waiting may just drive you crazy!

Keep going until you make it through checkout! (ETA 3:30am EST / 12:30am PST)

Step 3: Backup your old iPhone: November 2nd (This step could take an hour or more.)

Of course you will want to use the iPhone X as soon as it arrives, so be sure to backup your old iPhone in advance. iCloud is great, but it’s not necessarily the fastest way to reload the new iPhone. If you have a lot of content, like photos, apps, and videos, the fastest way to restore your old content and settings is by backing up your iPhone to your Mac. When you plug in your iPhone, and before you start the back up, make sure you have checked the box for "Encrypt iPhone Backup," or your Health data and passwords will not sync.

Step 4: iPhone X arrival: November 3rd. Hopefully.

If all goes well you should receive delivery on November 3rd. Open the box, power on your beautiful new iPhone X and try out that gorgeous OLED screen for the first time. You will be prompted to choose your country, WIFI network, and FaceID settings. It’s all pretty simple, and Apple has a support page to help you with any problems.

Next, you will want to restore your data from the backup you made in Step 3. If you backed up to your Mac, choose "Restore from iTunes Backup." If you used iCloud choose "Restore from iCloud Backup.” Choose "Set-up as New iPhone" if this is indeed your first iPhone.

The iPhone restore process could take minutes (you don't have much content) or hours (lots of content using iTunes backup) or even days (lots of content using iCloud backup on a slow Wifi). It all depends on your backup method and speed of your internet connection. When the restore is complete, you will need to answer a few more prompts, including signing into iCloud and setting up Siri.

Step 5: Selling your old iPhone: November 4th-14th

You just spent a lot of money on your new iPhone X, so obviously you will want the most cash back for your old iPhone. The fastest, safest, and easiest method is to sell it to a trusted reseller like SellYourMac (http://www.sellyourmac.com).
